Press Release Tuesday 10th July 2012
Over 2000 visitors attend St. Josephs Parish Outdoor Volvo mass
Over 2000 people attended St Josephs Parish outdoor mass which was held on the marina stage in the Volvo Ocean Race Festival Village in Galway Docks on the last day of the event, last Sunday 8th July at 11am. The event beat the record for highest attendance figures at the Marina Stage for all concerts/events that took place there all week during the Volvo Ocean Race. Parish Priest Fr Martin Downey led the mass and music was provided by the Ignite Gospel Choir led by Galway native Keara Shearan. Many residents and visitors to Galway attended this very special occasion which was a uniquely peaceful and spiritual morning in the race village, after a whirlwind week long programme of entertainment and spectacle.
The mass was the brainchild of Marlene Burke of the local Failte Ireland office and organised by her colleague Letitia Wade, Member of the St Josephs Parish Council. Letitia commented “We were so pleased with the huge numbers that turned up for the mass. It was a truly special experience for anyone who attended and Fr. Downeys sermon, which was all about the Sea, was very appropriate and very well received given that the mass took place during the Volvo week. We have received very positive feedback from people who attended and where the occasion arises, St. Josephs Parish would happily organise another outdoor mass for Galway. I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Fr. Martin Downey for giving of his time and for the preparation that he put into the lovely sermon.”
Continues to be me (Keara Sheeran) singing at the 5:30 Mass in the Jesuit church, Sea Road.
I hope to start a new gospel choir in the new year: New Gospel Choir starting for teenagers — Musicans very welcome — Drums, Guitars, Saxophone, etc. Contact Keara on 0879007003 and check out Facebook for more info. Please let’s encourage the young people to get involved!
What Ignite Means To Me
This is a piece written by a member of Ignite:
Once upon a time there was a world were people had less, yet they went about life with the words of a song in their mind. You would hear the occasional humming or whistling as one went about their work. Today we have wonderful technology with information overload; our peace is destroyed by others demanding our input, opinions, judgements etc. (texts, facebook) which only leads us to a type of restlessness.
Music settles my mind as I recall the tunes we rehearse and perform. The lyrics speak a type of truth that allows me to see a different world, a bigger more beautiful place full of wonder and awe.
Quote: “To pray is to sing and to worship is to dance”.
For me prayer (singing) is to have good thoughts and bestow blessings on others, dancing is to move in life with these thoughts in your heart. This smoothes the journey and raises the spirits. We need every
tool possible to overcome the trials in life so that’s why I believe everyone should work to be a part of a choir. It fills the mind with goodness and the heart with love.
I have been in many choirs and was fortunate to have joined ‘Ignite Gospel Choir’ this year and join such a great bunch of people younger and older. The range of music is perfect and the method of learning is second to none, directed and created by the wonderfully talented Keara Sheeran who tirelessly works with passion and selflessness to make it all happen.
I am indeed privileged to be a part of ‘Ignite Gospel Choir’ and encourage anyone with a few hours to spare to give it a try. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. Just Do It.
